Security & Disarmament

"The peace we seek cannot come from weaponry,
but from a commitment to justice and nonviolent actions
which recognise the dignity of every human person and all creation.
We reject models of security that rely on fear,
the demonisation of others
or on the strength of arms - conventional and nuclear"

(Pax Christi on peace and security)

On this page we aim to offer statements and reflections and links on security and disarmament
from church-related and other sources

Pope Benedict XVI, in his welcome address to the new Cameroon Anbassador, made a strong appeal to those involved in what is often an extermely lucrative arms trade to face their conscience and consider the
    consequences of such activity:
"I exhort all persons involved in the sale or traffic of arms, with interests that are often extremely lucrative, to ask themselves what are the consequences engendered by their behavior," the Pontiff said. • International Seminar ''Disarmament, Development and Peace. Perspectives for an Integral Disarmament'' (Rome, 11-12 April 2008)

The initiative is inspired by the concept of “integral disarmament” proposed by the social doctrine of the Church. According to Pope John XXIII: «unless this process of disarmament be thoroughgoing and complete, and reach men’s very souls, it is impossible to stop the arms race, or to reduce armaments, or – and this is the main thing – ultimately to abolish them entirely. Everyone must sincerely co-operate in the effort to banish fear and the anxious expectation of war from men's minds» (Pacem in terris, 113).
  • 'Informed Choice? Armed Forces Recruitment Practice in the United Kingdom' - (January 2008)
An independent report by David Gee. Research and publication funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust
Every year, the armed forces recruit around 20,000 people to replace those who leave. An independent report to be published in December asks whether recruits know what they accept when they enlist. Enlistment involves legal obligations that are much more restrictive than anything in civilian employment and an armed forces career carries many risks. The report finds that recruitment literature, web sites and the applications process tend to glamorise warfare and fall short of ensuring that potential recruits are informed of the risks and obligations of forces careers. An independent web site is also being produced for potential recruits themselves, setting out the facts as fairly as possible.
